Biofuel in our Petrol
The Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO), current legislation in the UK, dictates that 3.25% of the fuel we use at the pump consists of biofuel. Biofuel is energy derived from biomass, usually vegetable oils such as palm oil.
This is touted as a green policy but many scientists have shown that biofuel are worse for the environment than fossil fuels.
The problem with biofuel production is that it requires vast amounts of land, energy, fertiliser and pesticides to grow crops that are eventually turned into fuel. Because ideal growing conditions for these crops are primarily found in the tropics, industry manufacturing standards rarely meet UK standards. Land grabbing and human rights abuses are endemic. Perhaps of most significant concern is the loss of rainforest that is caused by the creation of plantations.
One of the (perhaps obvious) side effects of using land to grow fuel is that it can’t be used to grow edible crops. As a result its manufacture is making a substantial conrtribution to growing global food prices.
Current UK and EU policy sends a clear message to industry and finance – that biofuel is worth investing in. Investment almost certainly results in further deforestation, destruction and loss of biodiversity.
Of substantial concern to the UK environmental movement have been plans to raise the percentage of biofuel contained in our fuel to match European standards. This would mean raising the biofuel content to 10% or more.
However, there is an opportunity to act. Friends of the Earth report that with the change of government this policy is still under discussion. The Ministerial responsibility for biofuels lies with Tansport Minister Norman Baker. We are calling for as many people as possible write to their MP and the Transport Minister about this issue.
